General RMMSMSP FAQ's
- Q: I am wondering if this program is for high school teachers as well as middle school teachers?
A: Yes, the program accepts applicants from middle, elementary and high school teachers and faculty. However, first priority when filling course seats goes to partner district middle school math and science teachers. If there are still open course seats, second priority goes to partner district middle school teachers and faculty. Third priority goes to partner district elementary and high school math and science teachers. Fourth priority goes to partner district elementary and high school teachers and faculty. And fifth priority goes to non partner district teachers and faculty.
- Q: How does one pass information to other teachers who might be interested in the program?
A: Please see our website. If this does not provide you with adequate information please call the Project Coordinator’s Office at 303-556-6509.
- Q: If we were in the program last summer or previous terms, do we have to fill out an application again?
A: Yes. You will be required to submit a new application for every Summer Academy or Academic Term that you wish to take a course in.
- Q: How many courses can I enroll in each semester?
A: During the academic terms (Fall and Spring) you can technically take up to three courses through RMMSMSP: A Structured Follow-Up course (if you participated in the previous summer academy), the Math content course offered during the term, and the Science content course offered during the term (provided that these two courses are not overlapping times). This might be a bit hectic, but we cannot stop anyone from trying! During the Summer Academy term you may only take 2 courses total and they must not have the same SFU schedule (Spring and Fall). The RMMSMSP courses will stop being offered for a stipend at the end of the summer of 2009. Participants are welcome to take all 15 content and SFU courses if they choose!
Application Questions
- Q: Where is the application located on the website?
A: First go to the How to Participate in Courses For Teachers page and select the term you want to participate in. The under the first step is the application.
- Q. I click on the link for the application, but the application does not open.
A. The application opens up in another window. Check to see if your web browser is blocking pop ups. If your web browser is blocking pop ups, then turn that option off so that your web browser will allow the application to open in another window (you can turn the blocker on after you submit your application).
Registration Questions
- Q: What is the deadline for applying for the courses?
A: The deadline for the Summer Academy 2008 is March 1, 2008. The registration deadlines for the university's SMART system are
Session 1: June 4th
Session 2: July 9th
- Q: If participants have already taken a course with RMMSMSP do they need to reapply?
A:Yes, an application must be submitted every semester to be considered for the courses.
- Q: Who should I talk to about the registration page not working properly?
A: Please email the webmaster or project coordinator or call (303) 556-6509.
- Q: How do I know if you have received my application and registration if I did it on online?
A: You should've received an email confirmation after submitting an application. As per registration please call registrar office at (303)556-2389 or the project coordinator at (303) 556-6509.
- If you need to drop a RM course please notify our office immediately. If you’ve already registered for the course on the University’s SMART system you must drop it online there. You are not automatically dropped from the class after notifying our office, you are only taken off of our databases. We cannot administratively drop you, you must do it yourself. You will be responsible for the tuition If you fail to drop the course on the SMART system BEFORE the deadline posted on our calendar and communicated to you in numerous emails. If you miss the deadline for an SFU course you will need to complete the Schedule Adjustment Form found under Participation Forms. Fax the form to us and we’ll sign it then send it to the correct registrar contact. If you miss the deadline for a Content course you will have to submit a full petition to Dr. Tammy Stone the CLAS Dean. As of Fall 2008 her office notified us that they will no longer accept Schedule Adjustment Forms from our grant, because of their high use in the past. We will not award stipends to individuals who fail to add the class on time, regardless of their attendance.
Not Taking a SFU Course for Credit Questions
- Q: I want to take a SFU course, but I don't want to take it for credit. Is there a way for me to check if I am going to be billed for the class? I don't know how to enroll in a class to just receive the stipend without getting credits.
A: If you choose not to register for credit for the SFU course, you need to come to class and fulfill the course requirements to receive the stipend. The only difference between you and a person who registers for credit is that you will not pay the $300 tuition nor receive a final grade. To check your total bill for the class, go to S.M.A.R.T. and click on Finance then Account Balance. Each credit is $100 (online courses are at a higher rate).
- Q: Is it possible to take the classes without paying the tuition while still receiving the stipend? Or, is it necessary to pay the tuition for the credit hours in order to receive the stipend?
A: For the Summer Academy courses and the math and science content courses offered during the spring and fall semesters participants MUSTenroll/register for the course through the university SMART system and pay the $400 tuition. Please keep in mind what a great deal this is for 4 graduate credit hours! For Structured Follow-Up courses offered through the School of Education the credit and tuition is optional. You may register for courses if you choose to with the tuition at $300 for 3 graduate credit hours.
- Q: Will I receive some kind of a certificate that says that I took the class in order to use this class for license renewal credits even if I am taking the course for the stipend not the credit?
A: No official certificates are given. However, a congressional certificate of recognition is given to a participant that successfully completes both a content course and its SFU course. We will be to draft a letter stating you have successfully completed our courses with your grade and sent it to the appropriate contact. Please contact our office if such a letter is needed.
These courses would be acceptable to use as renewal credit for renewing a Professional Teaching license. You will be given college credit towards your graduate degree. Be sure to check with your college if it will be accepted there!
