Summer 2010 Research Experience
Content Courses
The RMMSMSP project offers science and math graduate-level content courses during summer (Summer Academy), fall, and spring semesters. Content courses are worth four graduate credits. Content courses focus on science or math content and connect the content to lessons in the middle levels (grades 4-9) classroom.
The summer academy content courses are part of a two-course sequence in which the first course is a science or math course offered in the summer. The second course is a structured follow-up course (described below) offered during the fall or spring semester following the summer. Participants are only allowed to take up to two summer academy content courses.
Content courses offered during the Fall and Spring semesters do not have associated structured follow-up courses.

Structured Follow Up (SFU)
The SFU course is the second of a two-part sequence. A participant will first take a science or math content course in a specified area during the summer academy. After the content course has been successfully completed, a participant would complete the SFU during the following fall or spring semesters. The SFU focuses on implementation of science and math content and best pedagogical practices in the middle level (grades 4-9) classroom. SFU courses are worth three graduate credits.

**No RM-MSMSP Structured Follow-up Courses will be offered after Spring 2009; Jeffco teachers will likely have an academic year lesson study through their district NOT RM-MSMSP, that corresponds with 2009 Summer Academy courses. This SFU portion is in the works and more information will be given out this summer. The SFUs will be optional and if you choose to participate you will receive an additional stipend upon successful completion of the SFU. Please contact Gwen Stroup 303-982-1330 with questions.
Summer 2010 Research Experience
We will choose 12 Middle level math teachers (grades 4-9) & 12 Middle level science teachers (grades 4-9) who’ve participated in at least 3-4 RM-MSMSP professional development content courses to be a part of a 5 week research experience. The Science experience will see two teachers paired together and put in a lab either on the University of Colorado Health Sciences Anschutz or Downtown Denver campus, a national lab (i.e. NREL- National Renewable Energy Lab, EPA Environmental Protection Agency, NPS- National Park Services) or possibly an industry. The Math experience will be comprised of a problem solving clinic workshop. We tentatively plan to pay a $5,000 stipend to participants. The RET program will be worth 3 or 4 graduate credits. In the Mathematical Sciences, the Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program running during the 6th and final year of the UCD – RM-MSMSP will be a five – week research exploration during the summer of 2010. The teachers of the proposed program will
1) Participate in a three hour, five day a week, hands on workshop.
2) Meet weekly with RET teachers studying other topics in the mathematical sciences
3) Meet weekly with RET teachers from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in a interdisciplinary math science consortium
4) Develop at least one inquiry based mathematics modules for use in their classroom in the upcoming year.
Intellectual Merit: The RET teachers will raise their level of understanding of relevant mathematics by engaging important topics in a “hands on” way in the workshop. They will be able to transform what they have learned into new curricular materials that will improve the mathematics abilities of their students and hopefully stimulate them to consider a career in mathematics or science.
Teachers will engage in one of the topics of relevant, horizon expanding, mathematics. Possible Topics include:
Number Theory
Combinatorial Game Theory
Graph Theory
Coding Theory
Probability Theory
