PLASMID teachers that teach grades 5 - 9 in the following districts will have priority. All other teachers will be placed on a waiting list and placed in the course on a first come first serve basis.
Math 5000: Algebraic Patterns and Functions I (4 graduate credits)
Instructors: Gary Olson and Nate Kurtz
Prerequisite: NONE.
This course covers the core elements of algebra including linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions and their graphs. Graphing calculators are used to investigate and model applications of ideas as well as introducing patterns, data collection and manipulation, as well as how middle school curriculum investigations lead naturally to the higher levels of algebra. Teachers are required to have a graphing calculator (TI-84) and will be instructed in its use and how it can be used as an effective tool in the teaching of abstract algebraic concepts.
Cost
Each on-line course is $800. PLASMID grant covers $600 of the $800. Some partner districts have agreed to pay the remaining $200. Be sure to check with your district beforehand.
Note: There is no stipend for online courses.
